Operating in an increasingly competitive industry Target’s sales growth YOY has stagnated the last three years, even seeing a negative sales growth of -1% in 2013. However, considering Target’s massive information breach in 2013 a 1% loss of sales could be considered a small victory. In fact, as Figure 1.2 shows Target has been able to maintain sales growth comparable to its competitors.

However, Figure 1.2 also points out the risk of increased competition. Many retailers and grocery stores have begun invading Target’s market share. For instance, Amazon has recently been gaining ground on the retail giants of Target and Walmart. Amazon’s online sales strategy have some wondering if the traditional brick and mortar store is becoming obsolete. While Amazon has shown substantial sales growth YOY, the company has rarely shown a profit since its incorporation nearly 20 years ago. Amazon’s model has yet to be proven as their profit margins are being eroded from high amounts of debt from innovation, infrastructure, and their low cost pricing strategy. Time will only tell if their model is superior, as their margins are increasing while Target’s are decreasing (see Figures 1.3/1.4).

Target’s decreasing profit margins can be associated with its failed operations in Canada, which has cost over $ 5 billion (net) since 2012 (see Figure 1.5). In addition, Target is still paying off fines from the 2013 information breach. We believe, holding everything else constant, that once Canada and the breach is in the review view mirror, operations should return to normal.
