Shy Lovk Victum Or Villen Essay

1078 words - 5 pages

Throughout the play: The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare juggles with the idea of Shylock being either a victim or villain. At the time The Merchant of Venice was written, Jews where neglected and abused by Christians. This is reflected in The Merchant of Venice, although the audience is made to feel sorry for Shylock at times. Such as when Jessica betrays Shylock by running away with his money and eloping with a Christian, sending Shylock into a rage and wanting revenge. For this behaviour Shylock is frowned upon and looked at as a villain or akin to the devil. So its debate as to what the Jew Shylock is a victim or a villain. Because he is constantly criticized and disrespected by ...view middle of the document...

Shylock mentions Antonio has spat on him before and to that Antonio says he will probably do it again so to that I ask why borrow money from a man you despise? I wonder if he would have ever paid it back.

Shylock has suffered too much in the play The Merchant of Venice. Jessica betrays Shylock, the first time this is shown in the book is when Jessica runs away and elopes with Lorenzo. The next time this is shown is when she steals not just his money but a ring that Shylock gave his wife in which she is now dead. Now my question is, why betray your own flesh? Now, because of this Shylock breaks down burning with revenge, it’s because of this revenge that Shylock looks like a villain wanting nothing more then Antonio’s flesh. But really he just wants what is rightfully his. All over Venice people hate him for his religion they think he is a crude and horrible man. So bad that they applauded Jessica for leaving, and laugh at Shylock in the streets as he cries. Now in the play it never mentions once why Jessica is leaving and you have to assume that she is ashamed of being a Jew. If this is true then she was not converting to Christianity because she believed in it but instead converting because while being a Jew it was so hard she had to convert to stop it. This clearly shows how hard it was to be Jewish back then and think about it being in Shylocks shoes would you really show mercy to some one who would show no mercy to you?

Shylock is a victim in the play The Merchant of Venice. Shylock was given a cruel and undeserved punishment by the court. First of all, this is shown in the court room when Shylock did not get anything he wanted, because Portia found a loop hole in the contract. Shylock did not receive money or a pound of flesh but instead got his house, money, and religion taken from him. This was unjust because he was the only person in the court room defending himself while being treated like a...
