Should Homosexuals be Able to Marry?
I. Introduction
Marriage is a social contract between two people. People marry because it is the ultimate expression of love for another. Marriage is a vow that says "I love you so much that I want to live the rest of my life with you. I want to share the ups and downs, forsake all others, and be together until death do us part. Should it matter that the couple doesn't fit into what society is used to? I say no. To disallow marriage on the basis of homosexuality is simply discrimination against an undesirable lifestyle.

III. Body paragraph #2 - Topic Sentence #2
The main dispute against same-sex marriage is based on religious beliefs. Most religions view homosexuality as a sin.
A. Supporting Evidence
In the current culture wars, we are constantly told by conservatives that gay marriage would be a disaster for the ideal and institution of (heterosexual) marriage. James Dobson, founder of the conservative evangelical group Focus on the Family, has opined, "Barring a miracle, the family as it has been known for more than five millennia will crumble, presaging the fall of Western civilization itself." Pope John Paul II judged same-sex unions as "degrading" marriage. The Vatican declaration "Considerations Regarding Proposals to Give Legal Recognition to Unions between Homosexual Persons" (2004) stated, "Legal recognition of homosexual union’s obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of mankind." (Rosemary)
B. Explanation
The higher powers of religion predict doom and gloom in the event of same-sex marriage. However, the separation of church and state laws negates their concerns; they are entitled to their opinions, period. I found it best portrayed by Thomas Paine.
C. So What?
“I put the following work under your protection. It contains my opinion upon Religion. You will do me the justice to remember, that I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his opinion, however different that opinion may be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it. The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is Reason. I have never used any other and I trust I never shall.
Your affectionate friend and fellow citizen,
Thomas Paine” (Price)
