Systems Development Life Cycle Elements

The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a general tool business and organizations can use to develop and implement new information systems. The projects can be large or small. The SDLC involves a variety of steps, elements or phases, and personnel to complete the project.
Essential Elements of the SDLC
The process of the SDLC can be described like so: “is first conceived as an idea; then it is designed, built, and deployed during a development project; and finally it is ...view middle of the document...

Some examples of how analysts collect this data are by “observing the users as they do their work; by interviewing and asking questions of the users; by reading existing documents about procedures, business rules, and job responsibilities; and by reviewing existing automated systems” (Satzinger, Jackson, & Burd, 2009, Chapter 2). During this phase, it is helpful to build a prototype to test ideas before final approval from upper management.
During the design phase, a solution is created based on the work/analysis/outcome of the previous phase. When implementing a new system, there may have been an existing set-up being used that just needs to be brought up to speed for the new system; however, sometimes the developer must start from scratch and create an entire network environment (user interfaces, system interfaces, database, applications etc.) for the new system. It is recommended to build a prototype system in this phase as well so changes/improvements can be caught early in the process (Satzinger, Jackson, & Burd, 2009, Chapter 2).
The final phase of the SDLC process, and most obvious, is to implement, test, and install the definitive system. If there was a previous working system, the data from that must be carried over to work with the new system. All users must now be trained to operate and navigate the new system (Satzinger, Jackson, & Burd, 2009, Chapter 2).
SDLC Process Employees and Their Roles
Developing an entire system, whether it is a brand new system to be implemented or is an update/replacement for an existing system, requires a considerable amount of time, resources, and teamwork. Some of the significant roles played in the SDLC process are project/team manager, system analysts, programmers, users, and technical specialists.
The team or project manager is the person(s) that acquires the employees and resources for the project. This person is in charge of coordinating the team to meet...
