The Middle Ages, people lived under a lawless society. There were no order or structure during the fourteen and fifteen century; it was a long time of darkness; periods of severe weather that leads to crop failure and famine. (n.d.). The early middle ages arts also known as the Dark ages. The middle ages period was when European history fell from the Roman Empire to the renaissance. Art during the early middle ages went through many changes up to the early renaissance period. The artist focus on detailing in making the art look realer. The picture or statue would also express emotions, social and spiritual aspects of life. An example of a mastered pieces painting of Mona Lisa created by one of the most famous and influential artists of all time was Leonardo da Vinci. They created realistic figure that portray style and personality, artist developed techniques by studying light, shadow, and human anatomy to enhance their paintings. (n.d.).
A2. Later Art Period
Social conditions in the middle ages were a period of good and bad times.
The later period marked by great difficulties such as the famine, plague, war and black death that killed one-third of the Europeans. Most people struggle to survive based on the strict condition that was so rigid. Social and political system based on Feudalism. Comparatively, during the beginning of the renaissances art period, great men rise to prominence, due to increasing in social and economic and cultural situation at the time. There were increase educational growth of the middle class population. Increase number of artist were able to display their wealth proudly. The Renaissance brought about much famous art of out time. One of the many great artworks of the renaissance is the “The Last Super” by Leonardo da Vinci in 1498. (n.d.).
In the late 13th to early 17th century of the renaissance art period, the Europeans revived classical learning and also brought the rise of humanism. It was also the age of discovery and advancement in science. Renaissance contribution to the art was one of the greatest the western humanities have to offer. Artist departed from the focus of the religious aspect of the middle ages. (n.d.). Gorthic art, known for its architectural design of the cathedral walls and abbey. Gothic art period include the use of sculpture, panel paintings, stained glass, fresco, and illuminated manuscripts. . (n.d.).
The relationship between the middle ages and the renaissance were the use of art to convey messages and meaning in a religious, spiritual way. The use of painting was used to express natural word. The Medieval arts were mostly religious with high focus in creating religious concept and not so much of realism. Unlike renaissance, on the other hand, that focus more on humanistic and less on religion. (n.d.).
