RIWT Task 1
Classic, classical, and classicism are all words that describe the historical period, quality of a literature, music or artistic style associated with the appealing achievements of Greco-Roman civilization. Classical art is based on the aesthetic and philosophical principles established by Greco-Roman civilization.
Classic art generally refers to a high regard for classical antiquity. Discobolus Sir Kenneth Clark said “classicism (or the classical era) portrays widely accepted ideal forms of art in various ways” (Clark, 1956, p.146). In the classical period there was a revolution in Greek sculptures (related with the introduction of democracy).

This was followed by objections to the arts’ lack of depth and to the use of decoration for their own sake. This social disagreement led to the classical era.
The Classical Period lasted from 1775 to 1825. It was called classical because in literature and art there was a strong admiration for the emulation of the classical artistic and literary heritage of Greece and Rome. The classical era was short-lived and forged during the Persian Wars but is very significant to art today and many artists implement the classical techniques today.
Renaissance means rebirth, inspired by the standards of classical antiquity. All of the art, literature, and music present today are based on the classical art evolved by this culture years ago. Characteristics of Renaissance art include the following:
· Paintings depicted both religious and non-religious scenes
· Figures were lifelike and 3D
· Bodies looked as if they were in motion
· Nude or clothed
· Faces depicted what the people were thinking
· Paintings were balanced and symmetrical
The Renaissance was a movement that was dedicated to the rediscovery and use of classical learning. Renaissance art came to be due to the combining of two different types of art by the humanists. If the humanists had to describe Gothic art (artistic style during the Medieval ages, after the classical era but before the Renaissance time period), and Classical art in one word, they would define Gothic art as barbaric and Classical as pure. Therefore the humanists fused together the classical and Christian traditions resulting in religious painting.
Inspired by humanism, Renaissance art expressed an individual; expressing an individual meaning to serve the aristocratic pursuit of fame, power, beauty, and virtue. Renaissance art “revived” the classical era in a better and enhanced version of new art. As mentioned earlier, the Renaissance literally means rebirth, and when historians say “rebirth” they are referring to the rebirth of the Classical era. And although the Classical era was brief, it was very graceful; and this graceful era was discontinued when Europe fell into the dark ages (resulting in medieval art). In the Medieval era due to the failed structure of the continent everything became very dark and gloomy; painters expressed what is now called a “gothic” mood which evidently led to Gothic art. Gothic art was serious and presented little emotion, used few colors, stiff figures, and apeared2D.
Renaissance art was a continued style of classical antiquity. The two epochs shared similarities as well as differences. For instance, in both art periods bodies looked active and appeared to be in motion. Figures were nude (or had the option of being clothed only in the Renaissance art period). Despite the fact these two eras had a few similarities, they also had many differences. In the classical era artists valued balance and harmony, figures were often more perfect in the art rather in real life, bodies...
