Risk management is the practice that identifies the potential risk before the risk becomes a problem. Risk management will also include identifying the various risk of an organization within a risk assessment, to assessing the risk and potential threats it may pose to an organization. One thing to be factual is a police department is more likely to suffer from a natural disaster than anything, and the police department will need a plan to assess the natural disaster properly.

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes will require a different response and emergency plan. The criminal justice system will need to do a different assessment for criminal risks. For example, a police department will need to have a plan on how to negotiate in the time of a hostage situation. In order for an organization to properly manage these risks it will have to monitor and respond to the risk (Marquette, 2013). Once an organization performs an assessment and identifies a potential risk the organization will need to develop a way to respond to the risk.

A criminal justice organization will need to have a plan in place for the risk of fire. The organization will need to have fire alarms, extinguishers, and exists. The organization will need to perform fire drills to prepare employees for fire. These drills will provide employees with potential escape routes and exits; so that he or she can successfully escape without injuries or death. In the event of terrorist attacks, a criminal justice system will need to know how to assess the situation as it occurs. The agency will have to contact Homeland Security, and first responders to help remove people from buildings and persons who have injuries. An organization without the necessary knowledge could be detrimental to the organization and city.

In order for an organization to successfully prepare for a risk, a criminal justice organization will have to identify the resources it will use to reduce the risk, and how to respond to the risk as it occurs (The Bureau of Justice Assistance, 2012). This can be a difficult task; however, the criminal justice system will need to have a creative way of thinking to identify and respond to the risk. The criminal justice system will need to plan and identify a risk before an organization can respond (The Bureau of Justice Assistance, 2012). The organization will need to allocate money within the budget of the fiscal year, just in case a situation was to arise.

Justice and Security Organizations Manage Risk
Justice and security will have the task of keeping people safe in society and keeping offenders of the streets. So many criminals are unpredictable and the criminal justice system cannot prepare for the criminal behaviors before the crimes happen. For a criminal justice system to be ready for predictable crimes, the criminal justice system will need to determine the more predictable offenses and the potential risk it can pose.

According to (Kelly, 2006), the more predictable an event the less the risk becomes, and the more opt the criminal justice system can prevent the occurrence. For example, police departments within the larger cities use to participate in high-speed chases. Now the police rely on helicopters to...
