Physical Security Observations
Physical security is the first line of defense for any environment. The physical security of any organization is divided into two parts, Physical and Operational, or what is also known as internal and external security. Physical security considerations include:
* personnel safety
* access controls mechanisms such as locks, keys, card access systems
* monitoring and detection systems like closed circuit TV, security guards, and guard dogs
* intrusions detection for sensitive areas
* personnel security policy awareness
The K.E.A.R. team external physical assessment began upon our arrival at the headquarters office. We arrived at the main fenced entrance where a stationed security guard was present reading a local newspaper. The guard waived us in and seemed to serve as a nothing more than a deterrent. After locating a parking spot we observed no lighting in the parking lots. There were areas on the facility grounds where rubbish obstructed key views to the facility. We also noticed employees using a key card to enter the building, which was a great thing. However, we saw other employees allowing those without a key card to piggyback off their credentials and enter the building
Instructions upon entering the building were to observe unlocked workstations, where no one was present, and to gather as many passwords stuck to posted notes on monitors as possible. We observed four unlocked workstations, two of which had passwords in plain view. The network administrator allowed us to view the main distribution frame (MDF) where all the main servers are stored. We observed no access control list on the door, and when asked to log into some servers the administrator logged in with a user-name of “administrator” on all machines. The administrator in question used the same passwords for each machine, which is not considered an industry best practice.
Operational Security Observations
Operational security is the process whereby Riordan Manufacturing defends its daily business operations from threats. Operational security issues include network access control (NAC), authentication, and security topologies. Additional issues of concern include the daily operations of the network, connections to other networks, such as to Riordan’s out of state locations, backup, and recovery plans. In short, operational security encompasses everything that isn’t related to design or physical security in an organization’s network. Instead of focusing on the physical components where the data is stored, such as the server, the focus is now on the topology and connections .
An initial observation of the San Jose location was that its network used a Bus topology. The bus topology has a major disadvantage in that all systems are connected to one cable; this poses a problem because a break in the cable will cause all linked systems to lose their network connection. Such an occurrence could cause...
