Review a range of different assessment methods available and explain the ones you would use for your subject area. Evaluate the use of assessment methods in different contexts including reference to initial assessment. Justify the types of assessment records you would complete and why.There are many methods of assessment in teaching and they all fall into one or more of the following three categories: initial, formative and summative.

Initial assessment is carried out before a course starts or as it is just beginning, it is used to identify where a learner stands in relation to the aims and objectives of the course and to ascertain the learners needs. Examples of initial assessment ...view middle of the document...

Formative assessment in self defence would usually be carried out by observation of practice and demonstrations for practical skills. Informal questioning of learners in a group could be used to determine what the student has learned on the more theoretical parts of the course.

Summative assessment methods for self defence could also include observation, demonstration and practical tests. A questionnaire on the learner’s confidence to deal with an attack after they have completed the course could also be useful as could feedback or evaluation sheets.

There are many factors to consider when deciding upon assessment methods these include the learning environment, the subject matter, the organisation and the dynamics of the learning group.

The teacher of a non-accredited course has more scope to use their own choice of assessment methods and can choose methods which suit the needs of the learning group, for example a teacher of a flower arranging class may use an observation of practical skills or a short interview as an initial assessment method, it is up to the teacher.

In accredited courses the teacher generally has to work within the confines of the organisation or awarding body and will be more restricted in the methods used to assess students. This ensures the same standards are met wherever the course is taught and whoever teaches it.

The type of learner group has a role to play in the choice of assessment method. The teacher may decide that a simple questionnaire would be suitable as an initial assessment of a basic skills group whereas a teacher of a post-graduate course would perhaps set an academic style essay.
