According to Restorative Justice Online (RJO, 2014), “ Short descriptions of the three main processes most often identified with restorative justice: restorative circles, restorative conferencing, and victim-offender mediation” (RJO, 2014, para. 1). Restorative circles are meetings held in a community facility that is attended by victims, offenders, family, friends, and even people from the community that are interested. Representatives of the justice system are usually in attendance as well. The facilitator is referred to as a “keeper.” His or her job is to keep everything in place. This process is voluntary, so the victim or offender does not have to participate if they don’t want to.
In the case study, Ed and David broke in to Mildred’s home. Not only did they ransack the place, but they also stole valuable items that belonged to Mildred. This affected Mildred. Mildred was worried after the break-in and had a lost of appetite. Mildred was afraid to stay at her own home. She had lost valuable things from her marriage like her watch. These items meant a lot to her, especially since her husband had died 2 years before the break-in. She was worried about how much time she was taking away from her daughter who was giving her a lot of support. It was taking a toll on her daughter’s marriage since she was driving a lot to be with Mildred. It was hard on Mildred’s son-in-law since he was busy with the kids and his involvement with the little league.
Restorative justice process focuses on a solution in repairing any harm done to a victim. It gives the offender the opportunity to volunteer in anything that will help the victim feel safer. As oppose to the criminal justice process, it focuses mainly on the offender. The criminal justice process is there to find the offender guilty and punish him or her for their crime that they have committed. If the offender has the chance to restore justice, he or she should take it. That way both parties won’t hold that weight on their shoulders.
