Responsibility: Major Asset And Decision In Society

1070 words - 5 pages

Romeo and Juliet
Responsibility is a major asset and decision in society. People in this world have choices. They have choices between being good or bad. Although people don’t realise they have two choices they should choose wisely. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a example of the two choices the lovers have to choose from. The play is tragic but exciting. The parents, Romeo and Juliet, and Friar Laurence are responsible for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
The parents of Juliet can easily be seen as the motive for their deaths. One reason for this is that they are pushing Juliet to marry Paris. For example “Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender of me child’s love… a ...view middle of the document...

The parents have proven many times how they could be the cause of the lovers’ deaths.
Friar Laurence can also be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. For example, Friar Laurence is the one that agrees to marry the lovers.“In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love” (II.iii.85-94).Although Friar may be saying good he can be traced back to their deaths. If he had not married the lovers, then maybe Romeo and Juliet would have forgotten about each other, or ran away to Mantua, or solved their problems in other ways. The Friar also could be blamed because he is the one that thought of the plan of giving Juliet the potion. By doing this he foreshadows the deaths.Friar Laurence did not stop there he gave another conflict in the plot. Even though his plan might work it is not please able for Juliet. “Hold, daughter. I do spy a kind of hope...and in this borrowed likeness of shrunken death; thou shall continue forty two and forty hours and then awake from a pleasant sleep. In meantime against thou shall take, shall Romeo by my letters know our drif and hither shall he come” (IV.v.68-76).This explains of the Friars plans and shows how outrageous he really is. Lastly Friar Laurence could be to blame because he should have been there in the cell to stop Romeo from killing himself and also Juliet from killing herself with a dagger. If he had been there, then Romeo would have never taken the poison because he would have known that Juliet is not really dead. Friar also said he was going to be at the cell waiting for Juliet to wake up, but he wasn’t. When Romeo killed himself it was just moments before Juliet woke up, so Friar Laurence should have been there so save both of them.
Lastly, Romeo and Juliet are to blame for their own deaths. The lovers act irrationally at times. Romeo himself is a very irrational and hasty person....
