Researching of Reading Expert Tim Rasinski
Over the years education has evolved from the one room schoolhouse to multimillion-dollar campuses, naturally educational expectations have evolved as well. The ability to read was once a sign of wealth and sophistication; now reading is an essential skill to function in every day society. Reading is used in every aspect of life, all reading research can agree on the fundamental importance of reading ability. Reading is the act of taking written information and interpreting it into language. However this means that one can read without full comprehension of what the text actually states, this where the ideas of reading expert Tim Rasinski come into ...view middle of the document...
“Tim recently served a three year term on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and from 1992 to 1999 he was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world's most widely read journal of literacy education (Recourses)”. Rasinski’s laundry list of credentials is impressive but what much biographical information failed to mention all the young students his researched has helped, by aiding them in their quest for reading.
Contributions to Reading Field Timothy Rasinski is a nationally renowned fluency expert, his inputs into developing reading programs have help children either build a strong reading foundation, or erect weak groundwork. Rasinski revolutionized ways to help young children develop their reading fluency, word recognition, and overall comprehension. Rasinski presented a research-proven early intervention program to the field of reading that has, and will help so many. This program is outlined in his book “Fast Track for early readers”, where parents and children engage in repeated, guided reading, and then do a quick skill-building activity to reinforce reading success (Fluency). This is one of many programs Rasinski has authored that involves parents and their children.
Rasinski’s largest contribution to the world of reading does not come in the form of a home program, but in the form of a program for the whole classroom enacted in schools across the country. Rasinski has discovered through his research that reading fluency drastically increases a child’s comprehension, which is the main goal of reading (Fluency). Young children are learning to read but at some point they will be reading to learn and comprehension needs to be at its highest. This program provides students with “authentic, engaging, and grade-appropriate selections for reading that lend themselves to repeated readings and performance (Fluency).” To grade this performance Rasinski has created a grading rubric out of 16 to test fluency (Fluency). Even if Rasinski’s program its self is not used he has revolutionized how future-reading programs should be focused. He as research supported the theory that fluency is the key to reading comprehension, that idea alone is largest contribution to the field of reading.
Rasinski explained his findings in lame mans terms by saying “repeated practice in reading, better known as repeated readings or rehearsal, improves automaticity, prosody, and comprehension. This practice has terrific potential for improving students' proficiency in reading (Fluency First).” Rasinski sees fluency as the key unlocking untold reading skills, however the difficult part is putting his theoretical teaching methods into actions. Rasinski’s theory breaks...
