Chapter 7 Social Processes

People’s relations w/ one another may be analyzed in various ways:
Relation by status- linkage of social positions; relation of position or standing that individuals occupy in reference to one another; “a static concept”
Relation by roles- functional, reciprocal interaction that occurs when people pursue their social roles together; expectations of social thought & behavior; mechanism thru w/c people carry on their mutual behavior
Relation by process- few basic, typable forms of social interaction that cut across all the numerous social roles people enact; a repetitive series of operations

cooperation- 2 or more persons/ groups act jointly in the pursuit of a common objective; an essential & indispensable requirement for the maintenance & continuance of grps. & societies; “reciprocal relation”
-more specific aspect of human intercourse; kind of conjoint rather than opposing action
-primary group- assumes that its members will cooperate
-secondary association- encourage & promote cooperation
-factors that account for cooperation:
a. conscious desire for an object
b. loyalty to one’s group
c. fear of attack by an out-group
d. basic structural need for mutual dependence
-factors attributing as “social solidarity in action”:
a. social integration
b. cohesion
c. solidarity
-types of cooperation:
a. informal cooperation- spontaneous; mutual give & take; “gemeinschaft”
b. formal/ organized cooperation- deliberate & contractual nature of prescribing the specific reciprocal right & obligations of the members; goals & objectives; leadership; large societies, gov’t., non-gov’t. agencies, civic grps.
c. symbiotic cooperation- 2/more members of society live together harmoniously, are interdependent resulting in mutual self-interests; lacks common goal/objective; division of labor in society & in market place
-functions of cooperation
i. creates social cohesion & integration b/w groups
ii. contributes social stability & order
iii. fosters consensus & compromise in various social issues

2. accommodation- minimum working arrangement that enables people to continue their activities even when they are not in complete agreement & harmony w/ each other
-2/more persons/groups interact in order to prevent, reduce or eliminate conflict
-necessary process after a conflict is over
-objective: “means living peacefully, co-existing with one another, w/c may eventually lead to positive cooperation”
-“give & take” (makes alteration/ adjusts)
-fact of equilibrium b/w individuals & groups & rules of the game w/c have developed
-conscious efforts of men to develop
-common forms of accommodation:
a. domination- the stronger party imposes its will & makes the other yield
b. truce- agreement to cease hostilities or fighting for a certain period of time
c. compromise- giving up by both parties of some of their demands & the mutual giving of concessions
d. conciliation & mediation- a third party is selected to reconcile the differences
e. arbitration- special method of settling disputes thru the efforts of a third party who may be chosen by the contending parties/ appointed by some large agency of power
f. toleration- without formal agreement; “live & let live” policy or the agreement to disagree; without trying to modify the patterns of others

3. assimilation- 2/more persons/ groups accept & perform one another’s pattern of behavior
