Compare and Contrast Paper
Christianity –VS- Islam
The two religions I choose to compare and contrast are Christianity and Islam. Being a Christian myself, I feel I know a fair amount in regards to this specific religion itself. I had always been told that Islam was comparable to Christianity in many ways, but before taking this class I was not truly aware of all the similarities. There are of course differences in the two religions. In this paper I will, to the best of my ability, discuss the similarities and differences between Christianity and Islam. I will begin this paper with an overview ...view middle of the document...
One tradition that may be dealt with differently is Communion. This is a sacred tradition that revolves around the Last Supper with Jesus and the Apostles. The Last Supper is the final meal that, in the Gospel accounts, Jesus shared with his Apostles in Jerusalem before his Crucifixion. The Last Supper is commemorated by Christians and, the Last Supper provides the scriptural basis for the Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion or The Lord's Supper. According to the Holy Bible it is said “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.†Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.†(Matthew Chapter 26, verses 17-30). Although all Christian denominations perform Communion, some do this weekly, monthly, or only on sacred days such as Easter. Other sacred traditions in Christianity include Christmas- the birth of Christ, the Crucifixion-Jesus dying for our sins, and Easter- the Resurrection of Christ.
One of the main goals of Christianity is to reach salvation. Salvation is realized in the life of Christians as a life of grace (Broadbent). One step in the path of salvation is through Baptism. Baptism is a Christian sacrament of admission and adoption, with the use of water, into the Christian Church. Baptism initiates a person into the new life of the Church by washing away their sins and being born anew (Broadbent).
As I stated earlier Abraham is considered the father of Christianity, but there are many important figures within the Bible that were prophets and did God’s bidding. Moses was given the Ten Commandments and told to share this word with God’s people after God had brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. These Ten Commandments are God’s law by which all Christians should live.
There are many things that Islam has in connection with Christianity. Islam is also stated to be as old as Christianity. Islam, although has a smaller following then Christianity, makes up about one-fifth of the people of the world. The heart of the Muslim population is not in the industrialized countries, as is the case with Christianity, but in the developing areas of the world (Ludwig).
Where Christianity sees itself as the fulfillment of Judaism, Islam believes it is the successor and fulfillment of both Judaism and Christianity (Ludwig). Muslims are similar to Christians in the fact that Abraham is also their ancestor...
