ABSTRACT
It cannot be denied that problem solving is an important part of Mathematics education. Mathematics, in general, is an important subject because of its practical role to a person and the society as a whole. However, before a student can successfully solve a problem, he has to posses good reading comprehension, analytic and computational skills.
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the levels of the reading comprehension and mathematics word problem skills of 297 out of 1152 freshmen students of Laguna State Polytechnic University Los Baños Campus.
Descriptive-correlational research design was used in this study.
The respondents were given a test on reading comprehension on the next day a logical mathematical test and on the following day the mathematics word problem solving test.
Based on the findings the researcher concluded that there is a significant relationship between the level of students’ reading comprehension and word problem solving skills which means that reading comprehension plays an important role for students to answer mathematics word problem solving easily.
