Reflective Essay

1500 words - 6 pages

In this assignment, I will reflect on my teaching section I am going to use Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This model is a recognised framework for my reflection. Gibbs (1988) consists of six stages to complete one cycle which is able to improve my teaching section continuously and learning from the experience for better practice in the future. The cycle starts with a description of the situation, next is to analysis of the feelings, third is an evaluation of the experience, fourth stage is an analysis to make sense of the experience, fifth stage is a conclusion of what else could I have done and final stage is an action plan to prepare if the situation arose again. Teaching is defined as a system of activities intended to induce learning, comprising the deliberate, methodical creation and control of those conditions in which learning does occur (Curzon, 1997). In Nursing, teaching is said to be the change in behaviour that we wish to bring about if we are to enhance and improve care for patients and client (Hinchliff, 2004). Teachers can use the practice of reflection to develop and grow professionally. Firstly as a teacher providing a good learning environment is important Dr. Thornburg (1996) tells us that a complete learning environment requires a balanced space. So I choose to have my lesson in a class that have adequate tables and chair to accommodate the number of students. Proper lighting and good air ventilation and required teaching tools i.e. computers, white board and etc was provided to create an active learning environment and facilitate in learning.
The topic I choose to teach was instillation of ear drop and the rationale of choosing my topic was due to its relevance to the area of my practice and learning needs of management of this procedure among nursing students was realised while working with them. The lecture was fifteen minutes and according to Renner (1993) recommends that lectures last no longer than thirty minutes. I started with creating a rapport with students as students will feel more engaged in the class if the opening minutes are personal, direct, and conversational (Knapper 1981). And then I assessed the knowledge level of the students of the topic with some questions, with that I knew all the students had an idea of what the topic was which made it easier to proceed to the lesson of the day.
Having said that, each student has a particular preferred learning styles (Fleming 2001) identified three types of learners who best learns by visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. I considered a lesson plan which could interest the different learning styles for a set of year one nursing students. According to the invigilator my slides was a bit too crowded but was very well organised and well presented with pictures. The slides were colourful so it made it interesting to the students.
For my teaching section I used Silberman (1990) five approaches the first one is opening summary, in the beginning of the lecture I presented major points and conclusions to help students organize their listening. Then present key terms and reduce the major points in the lecture to key words that act as verbal subheadings or memory aid. Next are offer examples whenever possible I tried providing real-life illustrations of the ideas in the lecture. Fourth approach is to use analogies I tired making a comparison between the content of the lecture and knowledge the students already have. Finally the use of visual backups which aids in maximizing students understanding and retention during lectures. These can be used to help ensure the effective transfer of knowledge. Besides that, during my lectures I...
