CAUSES AND EFFECTS
My research on determining the cause and effects of stress on college students is complied at the request of the President of Strayer University. The purpose of presenting this research paper to senior administration is to help students have a more positive college experience. College is a new and exciting time, but it can be overwhelming. Among all of the new experiences, learning, and growing opportunities available in college environment, many may lead to unhealthy levels of stress which hinder students’ abilities to socialize and to achieve ...view middle of the document...

One-third of college students in a recent survey said financial stressor have negatively impacted their academic performance or progress. Another 10 percent responding to the survey conducted by Inceptia reported they have had to reduce their course load to deal with stressors, including the cost of education and need to repay loans (Lincoln, 2012). For many students, college is the first time they are in control of the majority of their finances. Paying bills, working a job to make ends meet, and/or making the scholarship money that is distributed in August last through December definitely

takes a toll on most students. Unfortunately, these new financial responsibilities come with a can’t extra where money is often usually tight.
A Leading Second Cause
A leading second cause of stress on college students is time management. Learning how to manage time to accomplish what was set out to accomplish is a skill that will help many students throughout life. It is particularly helpful for college students with deadlines and many competing priorities that need attention. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and anxious at times, but having a plan to help organize and set priorities will help ease the tension (UHC, 2016). One reason the difficulty usually occurs is that the students are not prepared for the major academic differences between high school and college life. Another reason is that many college students are living away from home for the first time. These students are not use to the freedom of managing their own time and often fall into routines that are unproductive. Many students waste their time without even realizing it. Before they know it, their assignments and projects are due and it is exam time. This often results in long stressful days and nights of working on papers and cramming for exams.
Two Economic Effects of the Cause
Economic stress is the feeling of stress due to the current state of one’s personal finances and/or due to fear about the economy. Although some stress can be healthy, in the way that it can give you the energy and initiative to take needed actions or encourages someone to challenge themselves, economic stress can have harmful impacts, especially for college students (Brown, 2015). Two economic effect for the cause of stress on college students are unemployment and student loan debt. Unemployment and income losses can reduce educational achievement by threatening early childhood nutrition; reducing families’ abilities to provide a supportive learning environment (including adequate health care, summer activities, and stable housing); and by forcing a delay or abandonment of college plans (Irons, 2009). The long term impact of student loan debt is known. It’s crippling our recent graduates and it’s lowering the growth of the overall economy. Students are
