Pursuit of Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication is a very vital part of everybody’s life and success. This is because in our everyday lives, we communicate with people directly even if we do not want to. It was said by Confucius “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I’ll remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” This is very true because people tend to forget things that they are not interested in. So if your interpersonal communication is good, they will be more interested in the conversation and will recall that information more precisely. No intermediaries are allowed in interpersonal communication in this perspective. This means that if the message is conveyed through an intermediary such as a phone, email, or anything of such, it cannot be considered interpersonal. Last but not least, immediate feedback is the last characteristic in the situational perspective. This suggests that the people involved should be able to give and receive prompt and direct feedback whether it is from the messenger or receiver.
In the situational perspective, all these five characteristics must be present for communication to be considered interpersonal. Without even one of them, communication cannot be considered interpersonal. Many problems arose from this perspective. Since this was one of the first perspectives made, there are many loopholes that needed and were fixed through a different perspective. One of the later perspectives that were created is called the developmental perspective.
In the developmental perspective, all communications start out to be impersonal and not interpersonal. It starts out impersonal then grows to be interpersonal as time goes on. In this sense, interpersonal communication is “developed” from impersonal communication. There are many characteristics of the developmental perspective including cultural, sociological, and psychological level of information, descriptive, predictive, and explanatory levels of knowing, intrinsic and extrinsic rules.
There are three levels of information which include cultural, sociological, and psychological. As you go from cultural to psychological, the information gets more interpersonal. Cultural information consists of the language, beliefs, and behaviors that are shared by a group of people. With this information, one can find out the basics about the person such as what they speak and what they choose to believe in. The next level in information is sociological. Sociological information is based on group relationships. In this level, one gets to know where the other person’s group ties are. For example, the person can be high, middle, or low class. Psychological information is the last level of information and also the most interpersonal. Psychological information is based on the habits or mannerisms of the communicators. If one knows psychological information about the communicator then he or she is very knowledgeable about the other person’s behaviors.
Other than the levels of information, there are also three levels of knowing which are descriptive, predictive, and explanatory. Just like the levels of information, as you go from descriptive to explanatory, the levels of knowing get more interpersonal. Descriptive level of knowing shows that one can physically characterize a person to another person. But not only do you have to be able to describe him or her, the description must be good enough to where someone else will be able to distinguish the person being described.
