Soldaterne vidste, at de havde gjort noget forkert, sagde Sivits til efterforskerne. I hvert fald så vidt, at de bad ham om at holde mund med, hvad han havde set. Sivits blev spurgt, om mishandlingerne kunne have fundet sted, hvis der havde været en højere rangerende person til stede. »Nej, for fanden«, svarede han. »Vores øverstbefalende ville have reageret meget skarpt. Aftenen begyndte med, at stabssergent Ivan L. Frederick II henkastet bad Sivits om at gå med ham hen til fangernes opholdssted. De førte fangerne ud af cellerne og stablede dem oven på hinanden. »Et par af fangerne sagde »ahhh«, som om de kom til skade eller følte smerte, da Davis landede oven på dem«, sagde Sivits. Javal C. Davis svarede ved at træde på deres fingre og tæer, og fangerne skreg.
Delingssergenten, som opholdt sig en etage højere oppe, hørte skrigene og råbte ned til Davis, at han skulle holde op. Ifølge Sivits blev de andre soldater overraskede over vreden i delingssergentens stemme, men et par minutter efter forlod han bygningen, og soldaterne fortsatte mishandlingen.
