Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is psychological and biological symptoms that can affect women in the four to six days before they begin their menstrual cycle. A small percentage of women will suffer symptoms that will impair their functioning at work, in social situations or their schools. There are many ways to ease the symptoms of PMS including dietary changes in amount of food eaten at a sitting, limiting the amount of sugar, exercising and for severe cases the use of drugs like Prozac to help lower the serotonin levels which is believed to be a cause of the problems of sleeping and eating.
There is a direct correlation of the two previous health problems of PMS, tension headaches and migraines. Stress is also greatly responsible for other health problems. Coronary Heart Disease according to the American Heart Association is the leading cause of death in the United States. The risk factors of CHD are extremely high blood pressure, obesity, and a family history of the disease. Genetics can be an identifiable cause of high blood pressure, although when people get angry or under a lot of stress their blood pressure will rise. Alcohol, smoking and eating a diet that is rich in saturated fats are also contributors to high blood pressure. Two stress hormone epinephrine and noradrenaline play important roles in speeding up the heart rate and blood pressure which puts increased pressure on the workings of the heart and can increase the risk of a heart attack and hardening of the arteries. The types of jobs and occupations people work in, the amount of hostility and anger a person carries are also a great way to ensure the possibility of experiencing health related problems of heart attacks, and strokes.
Cancer is another health problem that is responsible for being the number one killer of women in the United States and the number 2 killer of men. The immune system that becomes weakened by factors of either physical or psychological are more likely to develop tumors and it has been shown that stress that has been prolonged in a condition of depression or stress can increase the chance of risk of developing cancer by the suppression of the immune system. Cancer is a scary diagnosis that normally people feel like they have been given a death sentence.
