OBSERVATION: My daughter was playing in the living room when she saw something in her playpen that she wanted. She started to get really frustrated and throwing a little tantrum that she could not reach it. After a few minutes she realized that if she brought over her little chair that was across the room, she could stand on it and reach into the playpen to get her toy.

WHERE/WHEN: At Delaney’s Nana’s house at 6:15 pm on October 10, 2006.
OBSERVATION: While visiting we started talking about how unfortunate it is that Delaney’s dad isn’t more involved in her life.

PERTINENT CHAPTER: Chapter 9 (Life Span Development)

ANSWER TO QUESTION: According to the reading in Chapter 9, focusing on the importance of bonding, these bonds can be formed with other caregivers and members of the family, i.e. grandparents. Since Delaney lives with both her mom and her grandparents the lack of bond with her father should not impact her social- emotional development (Huffman, 2007, p. 349).

EXPERIMENT: My experiment will test whether children ages 2-5 benefit from having a loving bond with both a mother and father versus a loving bond with other caregivers, i.e. adoptive parents or other relatives. I will randomly assign the children into two groups.
Group One: all children have both a mother and a father (CONTROL).
Group Two: mix of children who have both a mother and a father, and children
who have only one parent or other caregivers (EXPERIMENTAL).
Both groups will be put in rooms with the same materials (various toys and games to play with) and will be studied for the same amount of time (1 hour). During that hour we will observe to see if the children who have only one parent or live with other caregivers INDEPENDENT VARIABLE #1) socialize (DEPENDENT VARIABLE) just as well as those who have both a mother and a father (INDEPENDENT VARIABLE #2).

ALTERNATE FINDINGS: I would expect to find that the children without both a mother and father, but rather other caregivers, socialize just as well as those who do have both a mother and a father. If this were not the case and the children who lived with other caregivers played alone and did not socialize at all, this would suggest that not forming bonds with both a mother and father does have a negative impact on a child’s social-emotional development.
