In 1912 the suffragette movement was just starting to strengthen and gain some momentum. Source A was a poster created at this time which was aimed to promote the idea of women’s suffrage to more women and even men. This is done by using several techniques to show there reasons for women’s suffrage.
To begin with the basis behind the poster is that women can have highly respected and well paid jobs like a nurse, mother, mayor, doctor or teacher and a factory hand and yet they are not deemed responsible enough to be able to vote on who runs our country. On the other hand the poster show men in disgraceful and shameful jobs such as lunatic, convict, drunkard, proprietor of white slaves and someone who is unfit for service and yet they are allowed to vote for who runs the country just because the are a man. What this then does is it makes the person who is looking at the poster think ...view middle of the document...
The reason they have done this is because what they are saying is that men are allowed to be whatever they want and yet the can GO and vote for who they want to run the country, and yet however respectable and highly powered a women’s job is they have to STOP when it comes to voting, which when put in these terms is correct on the suffragettes side. This technique is called juxtaposition.
The final technique used is that they are playing with the emotions of the person reading the poster. This is because they make people understand there point of view and why there fighting for there suffrage. When a man looks at this poster he is guilty that the fact that because a drunkard (for example) is a man, that he is allowed to vote and this makes men support the campaign more. Then when a women sees the poster she fells angry at the fact that a drunkard (for example) is allowed to vote over her and this then tern into more support for the suffragettes.
The Suffragettes are demanding votes for women as they believe that they are just as capable to vote if not more capable than men are. What it also show is that women are more than clever enough to have the vote, whilst some men are clearly not and just because they are men they cant, so there is no need for the sexism in there society. Now there are demanding the vote after the suffragist’s attempts of doing so in the year before them. This is because the suffragist campaign wasn’t forceful enough as they only brought the topic into people’s attention and never really followed it through enough because they were smartly dressed upper class people who never did anything they shouldn’t do. This is why the suffragettes are being more forceful and violent with the issue and demanding the right to vote with techniques used in the poster.
