PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Professional Knowledge and Abilities

Career success can be affected in a number of ways, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Developing one's knowledge base and refining one's abilities can impact career success for the better. This paper will cover how these actions effect the desired result.
There are many organizations and professional associations in existence which influence my field. Choosing one of them to highlight isn't an easy task and should in no way confer a greater level of importance of any one over the others. With that in mind, I've chosen the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The ASME started out in 1880 as an organization built around the field of mechanical engineering, but today ...view middle of the document...
It keeps me up to date on boiler and pressure vessel codes, educates members and non-members about licenses and certifications needed for working in the mechanical engineering industry, and offers links to test prep sites for obtaining Professional Engineers' licenses as well as information regarding the body of knowledge required to obtain an Engineering Management Certification. The ASME is important also because it can provide me with a forum for discussing ideas, collaborating on design projects, and learning from the mistakes and successes of others in the field. The knowledge and abilities gained through a membership with this organization can be expected to help me succeed in the engineering field by increasing my technical competency. I can use the codes and standards promoted by the association to promote safety when working with boilers and pressure vessels or hazardous materials. The ASME sponsors career fairs and workshops in which engineering practitioners describe the ever-changing tools and skill sets required for success in the profession. Sometimes, the skills learned in college are inadequate to sustain an engineer throughout an entire professional career. For that reason, the ASME is committed to continuing education and offers a variety of short courses, in-company training programs, seminars and workshops, and online courses through the ASME Continuing Education Institute (CEI).
Overall, membership in ASME offers engineers a means to remain up to date on new technology and industry trends, certification and accreditation in several technical specialties and areas of management, job boards dedicated to the engineering field, resume builders, salary information, and career advice.
