Professional Knowledge and Abilities
LaShawn D. Valrie
January 3, 2010
Dr. Joyce Mackey

In this paper I will tell you how the Association of YMCA Professionals can provide me with information to giving one better knowledge and abilities within the company. The knowledge that I will learn will better assist me in providing me with the necessary trainings and conferences needed to become a professional employee of the YMCA of the Greater Houston.
Professional Knowledge and Abilities

The association that I chose was the Association of YMCA Professionals or also known as AYP. AYP is the professional society for YMCA staff members in the United States. As a membership organization, national in scope, it has been in existence since 1871. The Association is formally organized by 11 men on board a steamer on the Potomac River. Its first name was the Association of General Secretaries of the Young Men's Christian Association of the United ...view middle of the document...

AYP contributes the following to increase my professional knowledge and abilities toward my career success. First AYP encourages life-long learning for their leaders. While employed with the YMCA, all professionals are sent to different trainings and conferences to stay up to date with all the new membership or non-profit skills that need to know later on in my career development. Within these trainings, they are giving me more knowledge of what’s expected out of all YMCA professionals. The Association of YMCA Professionals also enhances my personal and career development, and promotes high ethical standards and Christian values.

The Association of YMCA Professionals will give me the professional knowledge and abilities that I need to perform my job to the best of my abilities by keeping me informed and accredited. The knowledge that AYP offers can impact my career success in many ways. It will help keep me informed of all new information about new membership policies, membership standards and membership global services, and will keep me up with the director certification process. The knowledge and abilities I can receive will also allow me to move up in my career as far as I like due to the ethics and values that I need to provide member services and social responsibility. As a prospective Membership Director I must understand and support the mission of the YMCA, the core values of the YMCA (Trust, Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Faith). From this I will possess the ability to deliver outstanding experiences for members, participants, internal customers and others; builds warmth and is supportive to provide service that will exceed expectations; responds to concerns and prompt resolution; looks for better ways to serve and involve members, participants, internal customers and others.

In conclusion, as one that wants to move forward with the YMCA, AYP can impact my career success by helping one develop the knowledge and abilities need within the career one has choose, but how it impacts is to the person and what that want out of his or her career.
