Kathy Kudler opened Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) in 1998. The idea of opening a gourmet food store came to her one day when she realized she could not find a good selection of quality gourmet goods in her neighborhood. Her vision was to cater to the “savvy shopper” who is looking for top quality meats, wine, produce, and cheeses. Kathy opened her first gourmet fine food store in La Jolla California in 1998. Kathy needs to train her management staff how to order and operate in her absence. At the present time if Kathy has an emergency or becomes ill there is no one else trained to take over. That could be catastrophic to her business if she were out for an extended length of time. She is not taking full advantage of her management staff. Kathy needs to take the position of the Chief Executive Officer and not as the front end manager at each store. She needs to be the leader of KFF. As we discussed in class, involving the staff more in the day-to-day operations would empower them and motivate them to be high performing employees. This in turn would increase employee job satisfaction.
Kathy has also chosen to employ high salaried specialized staff. Butchers, bakers, and wine steward demand higher salaries. These specialized careers come with years of experience and Kathy in not using each of them to their full potential. These employees are all managers of their departments; however, Kathy has not put the faith in him or her. She should allow them to manage their departments. Her stifling management style has been detrimental to her own vision of growth. Putting trust in her highly skilled employees would also help alleviate some of Kathy’s day-to-day responsibilities. They can do some of the more hands-on managerial duties that she should not be doing when she has expanded to three locations. She would also free up time to interact with her customers as she enjoys.
