Animal Farm - Power Corrupts
“You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again” (Aleksander Solzhenitsyn). This quote is saying that people gain power by taking almost all of it and leaving people with just a little bit, so that they are still in power. If you took everything from someone you wouldn’t be able to control him or her because they would feel free. In Animal Farm Napoleon takes away almost everything from the animals, but leaves them with just a little bit of hope to keep them going. Snowball and Napoleon were busy focusing on settling arguments and coming up with ideas, like the windmill. This made them less focused on treating the animals bad and the animals were just kind of there. They weren’t mistreated, but they weren’t treated well. A negative effect was that there were a lot more arguments between the two. They would fight over ideas and Napoleon would get jealous that Snowball was more popular. For example, Snowball had thought of the idea to build a windmill. Napoleon did not like the idea and how all the animals began to agree more with Snowball because of his idea. During a meeting about the windmill Napoleon stood up very quietly and said, “ The windmill is nonsense and that nobody should vote for it” and promptly sat back down (Orwell 47). Then in an instance he ordered the new born dogs he was raising to chase Snowball off the farm. Snowball was gone and the power was left in Napoleon’s hands and no one else’s.
By the end of Animal Farm Napoleon had all the power which was very negative and basically devastated the community, known as Animal Farm. Once Snowball was off the farm Napoleon started to change everything. His taking over led to food shortages, hard work, and death. Napoleon had complete control over the farm, which corrupted the idea of Animalism and The Seven Commandments. For example, one of the commandments was “All animals are equal”.
