I joined the United States Army June of 2013. From even before I joined the US military it began downsizing its strength. This will significantly reduce effectiveness of the US Army on a large scale. The downsizing is a direct result of the US military budget reduction. I’m strongly opposed to the downsizing of the US Army because in order to maintain the defense of the United States of America we need a large strong force to repel our enemies. This is the most negative and horrifying effect of the drawdown. Though there are people that feel that we need to solve our own problems before helping others I do not see things that way. That way of thinking is selfish and cowardly. In the US we enjoy safely and security that many people can only dream of.
The smaller effects of the drawdown are that being in the military has become more bloodthirsty. People are trying there hardest to advance themselves by any means possible. Not even the soldiers of higher rank are safe. Anyone that is not advancing or “being useful” is on there way out. Trust is slowly breaking down between soldiers and there superiors because any small thing could mean the loss of your job. The only positive thing that has happened is that standards that have been previously ignored are finally being enforced. Overweight soldiers and officers are being forced out and most soldiers and officers that do not emulate the Army values are being taken out. Admittedly there are some cuts that could be made within the military but the right cuts should be made. Good hard working people are being muscled out because the lazy people tend to put on a good front when the bosses are around.
