Personality Essay

1262 words - 6 pages

An individual’s personality defines who they are as a person. Tests and studies have been conducted to measure these personality traits. This paper will not only define what personality is, but will give an insight to my personality and the concepts or “construct” that explain my personality. Through personal reflection it shows variable environments determine whether personality features are consistent or change based on the situation. Although I have never taken a personality test prior to this assignment, I will explain why these test, if valid and reliable can prove to have variable outcomes if not consistent and continual.

I feel strongly that I am helpful and caring. If someone is in desperate need of help or support, I will exhaust all means to help the individual in meeting their needs or reaching desired goals.
Courageousness is a strong personal trait I carry. This trait helps to deal with challenges and stresses I face personally and in my career. Being courageous allows me to take chances and stick my neck without having the fear of failure or loss. Being friendly, outgoing and courteous allows me the opportunity to make new friends and acquaintances and even create long lasting relationships.
On a negative note, I am also pessimistic, impractical and arrogant (Posner, n.d.). The negative traits listed usually come out in the work environment. In the work environment I tend to be impractical in the expectations I have for my crew and tend to be pessimistic about what they are able to accomplish in a given time frame. My arrogance is displayed due to the years of experience in the industry and the thought that if I could do it, why can’t they. This is an area I have been trying hard to grasp and correct.
In social sciences, psychological constructs are more complex ideas that we as humans form in order to summarize observations about things that we cannot see directly (Research Assessment Advisor, 2012). The personality construct of loyalty and devotion towards my family is a means of measuring whether I am a good husband, father, teacher, and provider. I believe the positive investment in my family will produce a strong family foundation that will create stability, consistency, and further loyalty from my family members as well. The personality construct of being helpful and caring to others creates a belief that if I show these traits to others, I will receive the same in return.
The personality construct for pessimistic and arrogant has been developed because of a need to succeed and be the best at what I do at work. I have been with my company for 23 ½ years and have held many positions within. Through this journey I have been blessed with learning a variety of jobs and have been assigned various responsibilities. Although this is a good career move, being hard on my employees and doubting their capabilities at times have created a monster in me. I see this as a means of success and failure and grade my success or failure based on the outcomes of each project assigned.
On a personal aspect my features are consistent. In areas that affect my personal family life, the decisions and choices made are based on the outcome or consequences my choices will have on my family. My choices remain focused, constructed and geared towards a positive impact on the ones I love and care about most.
In my career, my personality features...
