Personality is the sum totals of ways an individual reacts to and interact with others. There are several personalities that affect employees’ behaviour at work. One of the ways to measure personalities is using the Big Five Personality Model, which found relationships between job performance and these five dimensions.
Firstly, the extraversion dimension captures the level of comfort in relationships. Extraverts are gregarious, assertive and sociable while introverts are reserved, timid and quiet. Thirdly, the conscientious dimension is a measure of reliability. A highly conscientious person is dependable, organized, persistent and responsible while a person who scores low is easily distracted, disorganized and unreliable. People who are highly conscientious have better efforts and persistence, are more driven and discipline, and are better in organizing and planning, thus, resulting in higher performance, enhanced leadership qualities and greater longevity. Next, the emotional stability dimension taps on a person’s ability to withstand stress. A person who has high emotional stability is secure, self-confident and calm while a person who has low emotional stability is insecure, anxious, nervous, and depressed. People who are stable have lesser negative thinking and emotions and they are less hyper-vigilant. This results in higher job and life satisfied and lower stress level.
