I stood in the doorway, watching my mom fight back her tears, as she studied the bills.
“What’s wrong?” I said as I looked over her shoulder.
“Nothing, just looking at some papers,” she said as her eyes were raging up with more water. As I stared deeply into her eyes I knew that things were going to take a turn.
When I was younger my family and I would go on a lot of vacations like Disneyland and the beach. As I got older in seventh grade, the vacations would be from ten times a year to once every six months. Growing up, I always thought I would be protected because I was the youngest, but growing up with a single mom only having one full-time job made me come ...view middle of the document...
“Mom, if we’re having trouble, then I guess I could sell candy or pretend to be a hobo on the corner, anything for you mom,” I said with a great smile.
My mother broke into laughter, “I love you so much. You always find a way to put a smile on my face,” she said smiling and laughing at me with a great smile. Making her laugh made my heart melt. Her laugh was one of those rare laughs you only see about twice in your lifetime. Making her laugh made my day so special. This event made me realize that money does not go very far. This made me appreciate and be very grateful for all the things I have in my life. I am very blessed and I savor the fact that I was raised by a single mom. She does all that she can for me and I know these learning experiences will make me a better person. I will thrive to be successful through these chaotic times in which we live in.
This situation motivated me to strive to be the best I can be in the career I choose. I intend to major in biology so that I can become an ultrasound technician. My sister made me realize I wanted to choose that as my career choice because ever since she was pregnant I became fascinated with her pregnancy and went to all her appointments. I will need financial help during college because my mom works two jobs while mostly providing for my brother that attends UCLA. Paying for college debts and college tuitions is a burden on my mother and by getting this scholarship it will be greatly appreciated and also a true blessing.
