I. Reasons for becoming a professional social worker
a. My interests in social work began as early as elementary school; I have always enjoyed helping others, especially those less fortunate than myself. By the time I entered high school I was planning a trip with my church group to Juarez, Mexico. Upon arrival I spent 7 days building a library at an elementary school. It was hard work, and a completely foreign surrounding for me, but I loved the feeling of accomplishment I received when we completed our project. During this internship I supervised anywhere from 20-30 women at a time. I dispensed medication, created a GED tutoring program that is still in effect, and built a rapport with the women. On Sundays I would take them to cooking classes in the community to assist in building life skills. I conducted drug tests, room checks, and intake/exit interviews. I would obtain and record demographic information for the purposes of grant writing and reporting. I wrote disciplinary reports for the clients and created inventory reports for household supplies. The second internship I completed was at Optimal Hospice. I received extensive training on end of life therapy and coping skills. I traveled to different nursing facilities and client homes to inspire self-worth and confidence. At times it was social interaction and communication to remind the clients that he or she is still valuable and wanted.
d. My aspirations as a social worker would include being an advocate for my community, and representing the special populations that need assistance. Eventually, I would enjoy working on a global level and traveling to other countries to continue missionary work, although my main focus would be on the people in Bakersfield, California. I would like to develop a program that assists in keeping siblings together, when safely possible, that are in foster care. I see myself obtaining at least a program design and implementation plan of this program within five years after graduating with my master’s degree.
