Performance appraisal is a process of obtaining, analyzing and recording information about the relative worth of an employee. It is a systematic periodic and an impartial rating of an employee's excellence in matters pertaining to his present job and his potential for a better job. A good appraisal system provides right feedback about the quality of performance of an employee. In spite of dislike by several employees, performance appraisal has become an inescapable feature. It imparts benefits not only to the employees but also on supervisors and management.

From a management point of view, one has to be judgmental, yet maintain a trust-worthy relationship with the employee and stay well within the guidelines as to avoid any EEOC complaints that could be filed.

Without any doubt, employees like to know how they are doing.
My opinion is that traits like loyalty and appraisers may prize initiative, but no evidence supports the notion that certain traits will be adequate synonyms for performance in large cross-section of jobs.Employees react to performance evaluations in two ways, negatively and positively. Some employees take positive feedback from their performance evaluations and put it to good use; get their yearly goals accomplished, try harder for a future promotion, where other employees that may not have had positive feedback at their performance evaluation may lash out again managerial employees as well as their peers. Gossip can start around a department from a scorned employee, a lack of effort put forth in their work and some upset employees can go as far as to report their managers to Human Resources.
Smart managers, at performance evaluations, tend to leave the yearly performance appraisal for praise towards the employee and scorn for bad performance throughout the year as needed. Employees do not prefer to get once a year feedback on their performance, employees perform better with consistent and constant praise from their managers.
Improvements
Organizations, Human Resources and managers in general can always make improvements to their employees’ performance evaluations. West Care has gone through several changes just within six years that I have been an employee with their performance appraisals and all for the better. With new technology, the ten page- 100-question packets can go to an electronic document that is simpler to fill out than handwriting.
