Ted Bundy

Who is Ted Bundy, what makes him do things he does or has done? The questions not just posed at Mr. Bundy but to anyone that commits crimes of this nature or serious crimes in general. How can a college educated man with aspirations of being the Governor of Washington State, a man who by those that knew him believed that he could be the Governor, a man by those same people who saw him as a loyal friend and charming. This is man who study psychology and was very well liked by his professors. This is a man that by any right is no different than the well liked neighbor down the street or ...view middle of the document...

Who is Ted Bundy? He is….
“Psychopathy and criminality are not the same construct. The affective, interpersonal, and behavioral characteristics that demarcate psychopathy do not necessarily involve or imply criminal behavior and "only a small minority of those who engage in criminal conduct are psychopaths". However, certain psychopathic traits (e.g. impulsivity, lack of empathy, and grandiosity) "both increase the likelihood that affected individuals will consider engaging in criminal conduct and decrease the likelihood that the decision to act will be inhibited" Moreover, psychopathy has also been shown to predict antisocial behavior in environments that should theoretically protect against delinquent behavior.” (Dhingra, K., & Boduszek, D. (2013).

This is something to think about when it comes to determining the ability of a person to commit crimes based on the characteristic traits of a psychopath alone. Even though you have the symptoms of a psychopath that alone does not necessarily mean that you will commit crimes but that you are certainly at a higher risk to commit crimes because of your mental makeup.

I will be going over some of the psychological traits of an infamous serial killer Ted Bundy and how those traits match up to what psychologist have determined as psychopathy traits and or symptoms. Mr. Bundy was a serial rapist and murder who would kidnap and rape his victims then would murder them after it was all said done. Mr. Bundy was convicted of 30 murders over the course of five years but it was suspected that he had killed upwards of at least a hundred women over his lifetime. Some of the mental traits Mr. Bundy exhibited were suffering of “chronic mental disorder along with a violent or abnormal social behavior. As a person diagnosed as a sexual psychopath, he manifested sexually sadistic behavior, meaning he hurts his victims sexually. In high school, Mr. Bundy had already started with his crimes that included shoplifting and burglary, he also had records of sexually assaulting women that would later on led to attacking and killing of those future victims. Another big factor for Mr. Bundy was depression and add on top of that finding out that person we had believed to be his sister all along was actually his real mother all along and then as well as already being deeply depressed you add on to that him being driven further in to depression over being dumped by his college girlfriend”.  (" Flow Psychology", 2014) Mr. Bundy was also documented as being very smart in school and as well as later on as that was demonstrated as he moved to Utah to attend law school there.

As stated by Schmalleger, Ph.D. (2012) here is a list of psychopath characteristic superficial charm and “good intelligence”, absence of delusions, hallucinations, or other signs of psychosis, inability to feel guilt or shame, unreliability, chronic lying, ongoing antisocial behavior, poor...
