Overview: Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You By Peter Cameron

1348 words - 6 pages

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You is a novel written by Peter Cameron. It is a young adult novel about the life of the protagonist, James Sveck. The protagonist was isolated from him family, and could only relate well with his grandmother. James never liked his peers at all. This can be seen when he confesses, “I don't like people in general and people my age in particular” (Cameron 34). In addition, he never wanted to college, all he wished for was to buy his own house and live on his own away from his parents, and people of his age. James lived with his mum and sister and worked at his mom’s gallery. He only loved his grandmother, and the gallery manager, John. His cynical ...view middle of the document...

Moreover, the narrator reflects on his past during the therapy sessions. Through the first person narration, the reader is able to see the world, and James’ life through his eyes. James did not really know or understand himself as he narrates his life experiences. He did not know whether he was happy or not and how to come close to people. The reader, just like James is able to experience his/her lack of place in the world by being James, through the first person narration. First person narration gives the audience an intimate relationship with the main character of a story, and Cameron uses this style to hook the audience to the book. The narrator’s voice in the book is awesome, and deliciously pathos-soaked. The first person narration fits the introspective character outstandingly.
The title of the book is the main character’s responsive system. The book is a portrait of James at the age of 18. The title just tells the readers that the pains they go through, at some time will end and life will be normal again. James was going through pains in his adolescence but as he moves to adulthood, he will have learnt from the pains of his adolescence. Any reader who stumbles on a book with such a topic is able to reflect back in their lives, to judge and criticize their own lives.
The milieu that Cameron creates is a masterpiece of a teen’s life struggle. James was struggling with loneliness at the same time; he was avoiding going to college just like many other teens who have graduated from high school. The main character believed that buying a house in Kansas would make him happy, other than going to college like his peers. He says, “And people my age are the ones who go to college. I'm not a sociopath or a freak; I just don't enjoy being with people” (Cameron 53). He did not want to go to college just to run away from the people of his age. The author through his character was trying to expose the characters of some teens after high school. He creates a clear picture of the pains teens go through before becoming adults. Many teens after completing high school will always have no idea of what to do with their lives, and this is clearly, what Cameron is passing across in, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You. Most of them reject going to college and put wrong ideas in their heads just like James. Instead of going to college, he is thinking of buying an old house to go live there alone with no one in sight.
As the book unravels, it reveals the life of James and his family. As it progresses, the reader is introduced to the family members’ interaction, whereby everyone is busy with his/her own problems. The problems pre-occupy their minds until they never notice what is happening to each other. Through...

These words are just words describing how people view one; they are not who one is. Looking at people like Obama makes me think that maybe one day, the definition of identity will be defined “whoever you want to be.”
