Based on the case study, what management roles does Sullivan perform?
Answer:
Management roles are identified by a management expert professor, Henry Mintzberg in year 1973. According to Mintzberg, there are ten different management roles. Thus, these roles or expectations for a manager’s behaviour have grouped into three categories which are Interpersonal roles (Figurehead, Leader, and Liaison), Informational roles (Monitor, Disseminator, Spokesperson) and Decisional roles (Entrepreneur, Disturbance handler, Resource allocator, Negotiator). At the same time, he is able to take action when there is any dilemma.
Thirdly, resource allocator is the manager who decides where to apply the resources. The jobs include scheduling own time, programming work and authorising actions. Additionally, it describes the responsibility of allocating and overseeing financial, material and human resources. For example, the manager has to draft and approve plans, schedules and budgets. Based on the case study of Outback Steakhouse, they are offering manager to work in the same location for at least five years and a work environment serving dinner only. Therefore, this has proven that Sullivan has the ability to allocate resources effectively.
Lastly, the roles of leader are direct and motivate subordinates, select and train employees. The manager’s duties are at the heart of the manager-subordinate relationship. For example, structuring and motivating subordinates, overseeing their development, promoting and encouraging their improvement, and balancing effectiveness. In Outback Steakhouse, they have rolled out a benefits programme for part-time employees which they just have to pay health insurance based on their working period. Consequently, Sullivan has played the role of leader by motivate the part-time employees.

In conclusion, Sullivan has performed the management roles of entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and leader. Therefore, he is able to make an improvement, overcome problems, allocate resources effectively and lead the company to accomplish higher achievement in the future.

Is Sullivan applying the Classical approach or the Humanistic approach?
Answer:
In a corporation, top managers play the most important role and they are responsible for the performance of an organisation as a whole. Thus, they will come out with ideas or actions intended to deal with a problem or situation. In order to get better for the corporation, every manager will come out with different approaches. Nonetheless, the two common approaches are classical approach and humanistic approach. Based on the case study of Outback Steakhouse, CEO Sullivan is applying Humanistic approach rather than classical approach for the restaurant.
Classical approaches focus on developing general principles for use in different management situations and it assumes that people are rational. Nevertheless, one of the classical approaches is scientific management. It is one of the control and coordination theories by Frederick Taylor Frank and Lillian Gilbreth. In the scientific management, the concept of “time study” has been used by Taylor to observe their worker in time and energy consumption. Afterwards, the results will be use to verify the best way for the working process which is the motion study. Other than standardised the work processes, proper equipment, working conditions, and workers’ ability classification are also important to improve the productivity of workforce.
