Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus / Aaron / Sinai

Exodus is the second book of the five books, known as the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament, dating back to 1445 BC. In the Hebrew Bible it is referred to as Shemoth and the English designation was taken from the Septuagint title, Exodus. Jewish and Christian tradition has believed Moses to be the author, however, controversy arose in the 19th century. It is now thought that it could go back as far as the 6th century during Babylonian exile that the first draft occurred known as the Yahwist. Some key themes, purposes, events, and personalities in Exodus is Moses was born, Moses chosen to lead the Israelites out of ...view middle of the document...

Aaron had a wife, Elisheba, and four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar with Aaron living 137 years. Aaron played a subordinate role in comparison to Moses and was ignored until Moses showed unwillingness to obey God’s call to free the Israelites. Aaron may have played a subordinate role to Moses, however, became Israel’s first High Priest. One of his burdens he had to bore was the death of two of his sons for an ungodly sacrifice made and he was restricted from mourning for them. Being at Moses side serving as spokesman in front of Pharaoh, he stretched out the staff of Moses bringing multiple plaques onto Pharaoh and his land. While in the wilderness Aaron helped Moses hold up the staff as a symbol of God’s power. While at Sinai Aaron and his two elder sons got called to go up the mountain where they showed fellowship. At this time Moses left Aaron in charge as Moses went further up the mountain. Due to Moses delay returning the Israelites asked Aaron to make gods for them because of restlessness. At Moses return seeing the sin, allowed by Aaron, being performed by his people resulted in the first set of tablets with God’s writings of the Ten Commandments to be broken. Aaron somehow passed God’s judgment when Moses sister (Miriam) and he spoke against the marriage of Moses and the Cushite woman. Miriam got judged severally probably because she was seen as to be the instigator.
Sinai is a mountain located on a peninsula north-western side of Arabia south central part of the peninsula. The name is assumed to mean shining and believed to have come about from the word sin. The peninsula itself is an inverted triangle with a base 150 miles long and is bound by the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba. Sinai has been referred to by many names: the mountain of God, the mount of the Lord, Horeb, and the modern name Jebel Musa. It is made up of three peaks from highest to lowest; Jebel Katarin (8,652ft), Jebel Musa (7,500ft), and Ras es-Safsafeh (6,540ft). There is controversial arguments about the actual location of Sinai. One being far north and east of Jebel Musa near the Gulf of Aqaba. The problem here lies the indication of volcanic activity, but there is no evidence of a volcano residing on the peninsula, nearest being Far East of the Gulf. The other being far north of Jebel Musa due to the battle of the Amalekites. The significance of this place is that this is where God spoke to Moses through a burning bush and chose to hold His meetings with Moses. God appeared to Moses through the burning bush giving Moses his call to get the Israelites out of Egypt and due to Moses unbelief resulted in Aaron being chosen to be spokesman plus lead to Aaron becoming the first High Priest. Also this is the place God gave to Moses the Ten Commandments directly from God himself on two tablets. All other commandments came through prophets.
