Structure and decision-making are predominant factors of living in the world today. The decision-making process is very important in all aspects whether it is personally or professionally. Structure helps format all scenarios no matter how big or small. In many instances these two components work hand-in-hand with one another. The following information describes, compares, and contrasts different organizational structures. The organization selected for this document is Cleveland Clinic. This channel of communication is very organized and effective.
The other organizational structure is called the horizontal structure. In this structure instead of a chain of command it is only one position of power and control named the CEO or president that makes all the decisions. The difference between these two structures is that it is less expensive to structure an organization horizontally; and a horizontal structure gets longer whereas a vertical structure gets taller. For example, a company can be departmentalized into different sections finance, marketing, production each department is placed next to each other in a horizontal line. Therefore, in this organization, the only line that sits alone and above the rest is the CEO or the President.
Cleveland Clinic
Cleveland Clinic complies with a vertical structure that supplies many levels of governance and leadership. They have a board of directors, board of trustees, board of governors, and executive leadership, which includes the CEO (Cleveland Clinic, 2013). Each department is responsible for their contribution of production and success to the company. With every responsibility distributed to the appropriate party and unit there will be no stone left unturned. This structure proves to be successful for them because it has made their organization prosper and excel above the other hospitals in the country.
Organizational Functions
Cleveland Clinic is a divisional organization each division has its own department of units and subunits also known as clinics and facilities. Every division also has their own allocated funds that are available for only their budget it is not like a functional organization, in which there is only one purchasing department (Bateman & Snell, 2011). In an organization like Cleveland Clinic the board members and other top-level management execute decisions and employ major plans. These decisions and plans are beneficial to the growth and maintenance of the organization, but they do not necessarily put in the physical labor as other employees that are lower on the chart. For example, frontline managers, doctors, nurses, and production staff members are the workers who do all of the physical labor. Even though they know many of the procedures at hand, they do not know all of the protocols and different areas that must be met in order to stay in compliance with many aspects of running an organization of this caliber.
When developing the best structures in the medical field there are numerous elements that are extensive and significant to consider. The results of these elements can develop more centers under the umbrella of Cleveland Clinic. For example, cancer, hospice, pediatrics, internal medicine, research, etc., are only some of the different departments that operate under the Cleveland Clinic organization.
