Explain how different leadership styles would affect group communication in your chosen organization.
Southwest Airlines was the perfect choice to research because this company is not as affected by economic downturns as other companies seem to experience. The founders of Southwest Airlines Rollin King and Herb Kelleher had a clear vision of what their organization should be and is reflected in the company mission.

It is through this special training that employees excel in their profession and leadership development. The company also goes to great lengths to maintain open communication with all the employees by providing the means to communicate with upper management in order to express new ideas or concerns. In putting the employees first, customer service is exceptional which has proven that Southwest Airlines does live up to its own mission statement.
Analyze the different sources of power found in the organization. How might those different sources of power affect group and organizational communication?
In reviewing the sources of power within Southwest Airlines, there is the formal power of the organization. The CEO as well as the numerous vice presidents who all believe in the mission statement of the company and are geared more towards rewarding employees through recognition and respect. Another source of power within the organization is personal power. Southwest Airlines has invested a great deal in training their employees and carries the belief that through this investment, employees become the experts out in the field. The employees’ in-turn carries a great deal of respect and admiration for the CEO.
This different source of power does have an effect on the group and organization communication through trust. Southwest Airlines management has earned the trust of the employees by opening the lines of communication and listening to the employees’ views and ideas. Management has created an atmosphere of trust which has created greater productivity throughout the workforce.

Given the culture in place at your chosen organization, identify the motivational theories that would be effective within that culture. Evaluate the role of communication as an element of these theories.
The motivational theory that is effective with the culture of Southwest Airlines is the self-determination theory. The employees do have control over their actions and it is expected from all levels of management throughout the company.
