Reflection
In order to be successful in life, I need to be equipped with all the tools that can make me survive. This life is full of changes; hence people have different level of needs but also the same level on needs. The stage where I am now can be describe as survival of the fittest because of life challenges and obstacles, but in order to be successful I must accomplish the needs that can help me battle and be successful in life. Abraham Maslow formulated a hierarchy of needs whereby an individual must maintain to be self-actualized. This needs include, the physiological need, safety, social, esteem and self actualization. For example, education, which is a factor that enables me to become secured with my future? Whereas, love of family, acceptance of friends, and belongingness are all factors of social needs, where I can say to myself that I am socially accepted is also fulfilled. The next needs, esteem and self actualization, being respected, autonomy, achievement and recognition by friends and the society, while growth, achievement of one’s potential and self fulfillment have really impacted me to an extent of working hard due to the involvement of people and other forces around me that would make it a challenge and my own self cooperation of my abilities and gain self recognition in my achievements.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a tool that individual most acquire in order to be successful. However, jobs specifically require these needs and other characteristics to make the work more interesting and intrinsically motivating for employees. Hackman and Oldham developed the job characteristics model which includes skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedbacks to affect motivation, satisfaction of employees. Each of these factors of the job characteristic model is very important in the work force. Though there are individual differences, which means that not everybody respond the same way. Skill variety is the number of skills required in the job, while task identity means the completeness of the task done in the job. For example, being responsible by fulfilling your task from start to finish at work shows how much you utilize high level of skills. I can say that I am fulfilling my task identity and skill variety. Jobs that provide substantial freedom at their work can be considered as having autonomy, while those who feel the job is meaningful to the organization have task significance.
