Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts
Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn (2008) describe organizational behavior as the study of human behavior, the understanding of group and individual behavior, interpersonal processes, and organizational dynamics with a goal of improving an organization’s performance as well as the people within them. Organizational behavior is also an academic discipline that scientists study. Companies also use it to research and observe the behavior of individuals in an organization. The higher positions in the company have a different culture. Toyota provides a dynamic culture to live by and ensures that everyone can bring the company success. Organizations with internal environments that have strong and positive cultures most often include emphasis on teamwork, a high-performance orientation, encouragement on taking risks, and an emphasis on innovation (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2008).
According to (2010), workforce diversity is described as similarities and differences between employees in terms of their age, physical abilities and disabilities, cultural background, race, sex, religion, and sexual orientation. Workforce diversity is a major topic within today’s organizations. Organizations are striving to promote diversity in the workplace. Companies spend a tremendous amount of money annually to provide the proper training necessary for a successful diversity program. AT&T as well as other companies understand how important diversity is and have made it the company’s top priority. Some steps that they have taken include providing a website for the customers that speak different languages, giving the customers the option to receive their bill in a specified language, as well as turning over 700 hundred of their stores into bilingual stores so that they can provide service to their millions of worldwide customers. The amount of Hispanics, African-Americans, and Asians in the labor force is steadily increasing. People of color will comprise more than half of the U.S. population by the year 2060. Around 30 percent of the population will be comprised of Hispanics (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2008).
