Social websites have become a large part of everyday life for many, and none looms larger than Facebook. A social network with 1.11 billion monthly users, and 655 million daily active users ("Iamwire", 2013), Facebook, at its very basic core offers the ability to communicate with others from all over the world. What is communicated, and to whom is entirely up to the user. Some choose to update friends and family on happenings in their lives, while others take a more passive approach and use the site to simply stay in touch with loved ones. In adulthood we continue to cultivate our lives based on environment, background, and situations. By means of mass online social networking and the expansive social mediums of rapid functions, online social networks facilitate intercultural and cross-cultural communication. Additionally, the culture of online social networks allows us to find a suitable partner for a life-long relationship, join groups and clubs that suit our personality and interests, announce important life events like marriages, births, or graduations, and we are able to stay connected with long-lost friends and family members living in other parts of the globe. Multi-cultural cohesion in designing online social networks with the appropriate language functions pushes the cultural masses to various sites. Cross-cultural divergences have an impact on online social networking websites and as society continues to expand its cultural diversity, social networks will continue to account for the majority of cultural connections and exchanges.
Social Effect of Online Social Networks
Face-to-face social interactions are an essential part of human relations and communication. As children we form attachments to individuals that help our social behavior and relations. However, as society has progressed into the digital age online, social networking interactions are now an important component of our social connections. According to the Washington Times (Goff, 2009), a 2008 study of teens online habits revealed that spending time online was vital for young person's to gain the necessary social abilities to evolve in online networks. MySpace was originally created in 2003 for the purpose of music artists to share their content and materials, book performances, and acquire band mates. Since that time, local bands, musicians, artists and everyday individuals have joined the site. In addition to the everyday social networking websites, You Tube and Podcast videos also create an opportunity for attaining more friends, and direct independent learning. Online social network participants also include businesses that have created user or fan pages in an effort to reach out to consumers. Providing a sizable business value in online social networks managers and marketers offer valuable insight to employees and companies as a whole (Kim, Hsu, & Tan, 2011). Since individuals of different age and gender have varying reactions and social influences to online social networking, it is important to take into account all variables of the social effects of online social networking in today’s ever changing society.
