Online Learning Essay

1046 words - 5 pages

In today’s busy world, a new way of obtaining one’s college degree is available: online classes. The question now being asked by many is a question of how legitimate is a degree earned online versus a degree earned by physically attending classes. This writer, and also online class attendee, believes that an online degree is just as legitimate, if not more legitimate, than a degree earned by attending classes physically. To be a successful online student one must possess the technological ability, the discipline to set aside time for homework and study time, and the drive to be successful.

Students with positive self-efficacy toward learning in online courses are usually more motivated and perform better in these courses. (Wang, 2013, p. 3) When attending school online a student must be able to prioritize their work both for school, professionally and personally. This takes a great amount of discipline and drive. Students who attend online and think that they are going to “skate” through, will see the results of their “skating” in their grades. Procrastinators run serious risk of not missing deadlines by trying to push the boundaries of the assignment deadlines. Most teachers set strict deadlines for assignments to be completed, and when a student does not allow themselves enough time they will either not receive credit at all for their late assignment or the student will be docked at least ½ of a letter grade, depending on the instructor.

Physical classes provide a lecture by the teacher, where students can ask questions as they arise, online classes do not have that luxury. Students definitely have access to a teacher, but the students must self-study and ask questions with plenty of time for a response to be given so the student can make the homework deadline. This lack of interaction with the instructor can lead to frustration for the student. When a student lacks the discipline to work on their homework well before the assignment’s deadline, the student runs a real risk of not receiving an answer from the instructor in time. This is not the instructor’s fault, but rather the students. The lack of face time with the instructor does lead to difficulty in the online forum. However, many students and faculty overcome this with discussion forums. This also helps to alleviate the lack of interaction with one’s fellow classmates.

An online student must be technologically inclined. Online learning focuses on a wide range of technological based learning platforms, delivery methods, and the integration of educational technology components into the learning environment. (Barr & Miller, 2013, p. 2) Students who are not technologically inclined...
