Nutrition 1 Nutrition and Exercise Plan Dennis B. Gilmore Axia College SCI241 Nutrition 2 Identification of Health Concern Coronary Artery Disease, Coronary Heart Disease, and Ischemic Heart Disease are all names for the same disease. The disease is caused by atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of fatty deposits in the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart, and buildup of plaque, or atheroma, can decrease the amount of blood-flow to the heart. Meat in my diet can be replaced with nuts, which are high in antioxidants and plant sterols. They are also high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which lower Nutrition 4 cholesterol. They should not be consumed in large amounts, though, because they contain a high amount of calories. Lower high blood pressure Be physically active Being physically active helps to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and helps to manage weight. All of these are factors that increase risk of heart disease. My exercise habits should include those that will help to strengthen my heart, as well as the rest of my body. Lately I have been focusing on strength training, and have not been doing much aerobic exercise. To help avoid heart disease, I will include more aerobic exercise in my workout routine. Nutrition 5 When I am not active at work, I can jog down the road in the evenings. This is an excellent cardiovascular workout, and will help my heart to be stronger. I will commit to running three evenings per week. Practicing boxing and hitting the heavy bag are other cardiovascular workouts that I can do at almost any time. Besides conditioning and toning my arms and upper body, these activities get my heart rate up and will help to make my heart muscle stronger. Continuing to do this exercise three times a week for half an hour will help to keep me in shape and will be good for my heart. I can also make small changes in my daily life outside of home. I can take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever it is possible. I can also park farther away from my destination so that I can take a longer walk. Walking my dogs for a longer period of time will also be good for my heart. Choose good nutrition Choosing healthy foods can help reduce my risk of heart disease. Cutting back on some foods, and increasing my intake of others is key to preventing a heart attack.
