Increases Healthcare Staffs' Stress
To provide better nursing care, the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4 in California acute care hospital Medical/Surgical floor and 1:2 in postoperative anesthesia care unit (PACU). But this is not base on patient condition and staff experience and education. For example: an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) patient finishes surgery and transfers to PACU. The patient needs a lot of patient care. It supposes one nurse focus taking care of this patient. But some hospitals just follow 1:2 ratio and ask the nurse to take care of two patients. It will be unsafe for the patient and stressful for the nurses. Nurses are in the frontline when it comes to providing care to patients. Nurses work tirelessly to provide the best care possible. They try to do this even when they are short staffed by doing more work faster and doing faster work quicker. This happens even to their own detriment. This is what nurses do, putting others before themselves. However, for years and years do the same, nurses will be stressful and burnout.
