Nursing is a call to serve the humanity. Present day healthcare system focused on preventive care and wellness has become highly advanced which makes every nurse responsible to achieve maximum level of education, skills and power of knowledge to meet the challenges. For personal satisfactions as well as professional accomplishment, it is imperative that nurses progress in their profession through higher education. Thus, career development enables nurses to react positively to healthcare challenges of the day. In fact, career development has brought all changes and progress in healthcare system and nursing profession (International Council of Nurses, 2007).
In the article titled “An empowerment framework for nursing leadership development: supporting evidence”, authors discuss how theoretical empowerment of nurse leaders through education and practical training results in better healthcare outcome. Structural and psychological empowerment of nurse leaders contribute to better job satisfaction, patient outcome and their commitment towards the organization (MacPhee, Skeleton-Green, Bouthille, & Suryaprakash, 2011). Authors investigated options for empowering nurses using institutional training, collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches of training and have recommended making use of the available literature to overcome barriers in nursing by improving communication, by proper resources allocation, understanding of technology and present day science.
In another article “Promoting Professional Development: Three Phases of Articulation in Nursing Education and Practice”, authors explore the process of nursing education and studies the fulfillment and advancement of education and its contribution towards nursing career development in three phases over a span of forty (40) years. In the first phase, nurses used to come and exit from the system due to poor working conditions and environment. There was no proper organizational structure and compensation was not satisfying. Education was limited in scope, had a spiral structure and not well defined. Second phase showed more progress with advancement in education and profession. It was in this phase that associate degree to bachelor’s, bachelors to masters and masters to doctorate programs developed. This phase recognized nursing as a profession seriously and developed a vision for the future. In the thirds phase, as we see today, came all the evidence based practices and developed ladders in nursing profession where the boundaries of nursing practice is ever expanding, preparing nurses to undertake challenging roles in administration and leadership. In short, authors have described clearly what has evolved over the span of 40 years and the need to adhere to working on evidence based practice (Donley & Flaherty, 2008).
