In year 1803, the young English chemist John Dalton stated atoms as the smallest unit of matter and he was first to propose an atomic model. Even though his atomic model was not accurate, it interested other scientists in his studies. In the end, the combined research and experiments by Democritus, John Dalton, J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and Niels Bohr developed the atomic model we know today, a positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbitals with scattered electrons. This significant discovery led to the development many new areas of knowledge. One of the most important areas was the introduction to nuclear medicine.

In the end, the Curies were also able to set the numerical standards of the rate of radioactive emanations of charged particles. (Slowiczek) Of the five scientists that gradually uncovered the atomic model, Rutherford also played a role in the discovery of radiology through his gold foil experiment. His planetary model with a positively charged nucleus is very close to the one we use today. Taking everything to account, the discovery and understanding of radioactivity would have been impossible without first understanding the atom itself because radioactive emissions are atomic properties.
If used correctly, nuclear medicine has many benefits to modern medicine. The most important benefit of nuclear medicine is its capability of diagnosing diseases, assessing its severity, and monitoring its treatment. (Mortenson) The radio isotopes in nuclear medicine now allow physicians to check the condition and health of the internal organs of a patient, which aids in the early detection of diseases. (ProScan Imaging) The earlier one is diagnosed, the more chance one has of surviving from their diseases. In addition, nuclear medicine provides information that is more precise and useful than other ways, like exploratory surgery. Nuclear medicine has also made it possible for people to give effective treatment to noncommunicable diseases, such as cancers and cardiovascular diseases, which causes more than 36 million deaths each year. However, if used incorrectly, nuclear medicine can have many harmful risks. For example, it is unsafe if patients are prescribed an overdose of radioisotopes, more than a half-life, since only small amounts of radioisotopes will remain harmless to the human body. (Citizens for Medical Isotopes) Thus, large doses of radioisotopes can bring immediate harm to a person’s internal organs and their healthy tissues. (ProScan Imaging) Likewise, the radiations given off during nuclear medicine exams are said to have the potential risk of developing cancer, but since the exposure is very small, it has never occurred before.
