2. Explain why issues of organisational structure or culture may affect information acquisition, availability, flow and exploitation in your company
Organizational culture is the values and belief of the people with an organization, it is personality of the organization and includes assumptions, values and normalities of behaviour within the cultures. The structure of the organisation is hierarchical. Thomas Meikles Stores has the culture of comprehensive in-house induction and familiarisation training packages which ensure all new staffs are welcomes to the company know and understand their roles and receive the knowledge and skills required to do the job.
The company have opted to delayer their organizations. Delayaring is the process of removing one or more levels in the hierarchy in order to flatten out the organizational structure. This will therefore reduce the number of layers of management and widen the span of control.
Departmentalization can lead to staff being isolated to their official. If there any changes in the external business environment that require structural changes in the organisation it creates problems. If the size of the core work force is reduced it causes downsizing.
Downsizing creates anxiety and no security among staff. The employees will be worried about their post in the restructured company. Staff at Thomas Meikles Stores will lose their jobs and others will be demoted if the company downsizes and delayers. These issues will affect the level of staff motivation and productivity and staff will be overstretched as the workload increases. This can have a counterproductive effect on the quality of work and staff’s ability to meet the deadlines. Managers will take longer time to make decisions as they are dealing with larger teams.
When the company is putting new thing into place (new technology, equipments) or having important information they should consider culture otherwise they won’t succeed. Some workers do not like to share their knowledge of skills they have because of being jealous or lack trust of their senior so they prefer to keep the data themselves than sharing with others at work and some because of racism they will never pass information to others. This will affect the company by losing a lot of sales. The workers should share data to improve efficient and their performance and the managers should be update with correct data and accurate feedback all the time.
