No Child Left Behind
“There may be a crisis in America’s high schools, but not many are paying attention.” (Lewis, Washington scene) No child left behind – Is this beneficial or doing more harm than good for our children? I disagree with the NCLB (No child left behind) act; even though there are some good pints listed in this article, some children should be held back so that they can achieve academic success as they progress through their scholastic years. Passing students without the proper course requirement will and can hurt a student through the later academic years.

I understand that it is also the students’ responsibility to get extra help from a tutor in the field/subject that troubles them, but there are unreliable resources in our high schools unlike our colleges that have tutoring centers to help a student succeed. Furthermore some parents are unable to afford private tutors for their children. For example, my son has been passed from the tenth-grade to the eleventh-grade without the mathematical skills, thus causing him to double up on his course in eleventh-grade; which caused him to lag behind and retake the tenth-grade math course along with new material in the eleventh-grade. Had he been held back and rethought the subject he now would be successful in the eleventh-grade.
Second, if high schools do not pass students they will not receive federal funding and will be under the watchful eye of the federal government. Schools will also not be labeled as “A” schools and this would be detrimental to the institute as parents will seek other public schools with an “A” rating causing certain schools to lose federal funding and close their doors.
