Player’s Analysis of the Reality
The United States of America
The United States of America (US) is a strong advocate of democracy and liberalism. The US has, for decades, supported the Latin American governments in their continuous struggle against the drug cartels. The US has also devoted numerous resources aiming to reduce the drug demand and consumption in US national territory.
Guatemala is considered by US drug officials (as well as prosecutors and attorneys in the region) as key to the global drug trade and the main center of distribution of cocaine and crack in the region that are submitted to the U.S. via the southern border with Mexico.
Mexico is the main way through which drugs reach American territory and therefore it is in American interest to strengthen Mexican southern borders with Guatemala and Belize. If the conflict was to continue, the entire Central American region could see itself very damaged from the unsteadiness and the weakness demonstrated by the central governments.
United Mexican States
The United Mexican States (Mexico) is a strong supporter of democracy and liberal values. When Felipe Calderon came into power, one of its firsts and most determinant goals was to eradicate the organized crime from Mexican territory. For decades, Mexico has fought the endless fight against organized crime organizations with some results; however it can be seen that it has a long way to go before reaching the expected goal. Along the years, it has pursued countless methods, approaches and techniques attempting to stop – or at least to weaken – the drug cartels within its territory. As a consequence of this struggle, thousands have died and many cartels have decided to “open branches” in neighboring countries.
The current situation, as we know, is complicated in many ways. Mexico – and Guatemala – is caught in a conflict that needs to be stopped and it is not clear to the central government how to do it due to the asymmetry in power and strength that they face against the drug cartels. On the other hand, the Mexican government is being pressured by the international public opinion and the media to act and protect its people and bring the conflict to a halt.
Republic of Guatemala
The Republic of Guatemala (Guatemala) is a promoter of liberalism and democracy. Guatemala, due to its geographical location is a strategically vital route for every drug cartel that has business in Mexico and in the US.
For decades, each and every administration has endeavored innumerable means and techniques making use of countless resources in the battle against the different cartels and their drug and people trafficking businesses.
The present conflict comes in the worst possible time. Presidential elections are a year and a half away and Alvaro Colom (the current president) is running for re-election....
