Describe the basic elements of the nature-nurture controversy.
The amount of influence that genes have on personality verses the influence of learning experiences is not only related to genetics but also psychology. The debate of nature- nurture controversy has been studied for over 130 years and is still being researched. “After studying many prominent English families, Galton concluded that intelligence is inherited- that nature, not nurture, is responsible for intelligence” (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2005, p. 278). Nature refers to an individual’s innate qualities. Genes is considered nature, the physical and personality traits determined by ones genes will always stay the same. , 2005, p. 278). We know both nature and nurture play crucial roles in human development, however research shows that whether nature or nurture is what primarily develops a human is not proven. “Today, most psychologists agree that both nature and nurture contribute to intelligence, but they continue to debate the relative contributions of these two factors” (Wood et al., 2005, p. 278). There is no right or wrong regarding this debate. An individual’s genes make them who they are but experiences are what make a person’s life. This debate will never end, however research will keep arising and questioning psychologists and society.
Compare and contrast two studies on nature- nurture.
There are many different research studies regarding nature vs. nurture and a majority of them are based on twin studies. Each of these studies utilizes twin studies. The first one is a set of 800 twins and the second one is based on one set of twins. Both studies demonstrate that genetics are essential is how an individual matures.
Describe each study.
“The study, which utilizes previous research that connects happiness and genetics, says that your genes mean more than outside factors in certain situations” (Jordan, 2012). The first study utilizes 800 set of twins. Researchers found that genetics are more influential in shaping an individual rather than their environment. Genetics also determine how successful one is. Each participant was asked multiple questions and their results were evaluated. Researchers found that identical twins were twice as likely to share traits as non- identical twins who’s DNA wasn’t the same. The stronger the genetics the more likely traits will be passed down through a family. The...
